Moscow – Kazan Highway To Be Completed In 2027

Construction of a new toll highway between Moscow and Kazan will begin next year and is expected to be completed in 2027, according to Maksim Akimov, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister. The project is part of the Europe-Western China corridor currently being constructed.

Akimov stated that “Works will start at the beginning of 2020, meaning the construction of new sections from Moscow to Vladimir, which is 145 kilometers, including bypasses of Balashikha and Noginsk. The new highway will be fully ready by 2027.”

The project divides the construction of the highway into stages, and includes two initial  parts – from Moscow to Vladimir bypassing Vladimir city centre as a ring road, the construction of which is planned to be launched in 2020, as well as the southern bypass of Kazan. These works are planned to be completed by 2024. The third stage will start in 2021 – the section from Vladimir to Arzamas, which will be completed by 2025. In 2022, those two sections  will start to be connected, linking Arzamas and Kanash.

Pre-project development is also underway for extension of the highway from Kazan to Yekaterinburg.

The China-Western Europe transport corridor, also known in part as the Meridian Highway, has already seen construction begin on the first section of the corridor this year: a toll road linking China’s western neighbour Kazakhstan with Belarus.

The Meridian section will span 2,000 km from the Russia-Kazakh border to a junction of the existing M1 highway that connects Minsk and Belarus with Moscow.

It will shorten trucking routes between cargo hubs in western China and central Europe and offer a faster, if more expensive, alternative to three existing rail corridors.
